SEO What they don’t tell you.

An optimized website

What they say: Even if you don’t actually sell products online, a website gives potential customers and investors the opportunity to find out more about you and your company. For a website to be effective and bring new customers and investors to your doors it needs to be seen. Search engine optimization can help position your website on the first few pages of the search engines which means it’s much more likely to receive visitors.

As well as ensuring the copywriting on your website is optimized with keywords, you need to make sure your web developers or designers have created an SEO friendly website.

With 65,000 new websites coming online every day, not including new pages and blog added to existing websites daily the chances of you ever seeing high traffic and rankings without a BIG cost is near on impossible. Nobody ever mentions the cost do they.

Fact: Investment for marketing the website from approx. $1500 – $20,000 per month depending on size and your competition.

Active social media channels

What they say: Having a profile set up on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn (plus the numerous other social media networks) isn’t enough. For your social media campaign to be a success you need to continually interact with your network.

And to be honest who gives a crap what bus stop or pizza shop you’re at or what you have just eaten, Your top score on a farm game or flirting teens pretending while the parents are out. Get a life. Limited for business unless very local.

Fact: A full-time job to do it properly along with a full-time salary approx. $30,000 – $50,000 per annum.

An up to date blog

What they say: Blogging is one of the quickest and easiest ways to forge an identity for yourself online. Blogs allow you to share your expertise with your visitors and it encourages them to see you as a leading authority in your industry sector. As you build up your blog with opinion pieces, news stories and reviews you will create an online resource for your blog visitors.

Fact: Takes your time and money, time is money or employ someone to do it, another salary.

While there is a lot of information and help out there to get you started, do not be taken in by all the BS that people and company’s shovel out. Sure Google also has SEO guidelines which cover what you should and should not be doing in order to create a well optimized website. Check it out  Rand at SEOMoz have a multitude of free blogs, videos and podcasts on their website to help people understand the basic (and more advanced) SEO techniques too, but the cold hard facts are it takes time, money and knowledge to be a real player. As I have said many times, pay peanuts and you will get monkey’s.

As a small business if you don’t have at least $20k a year to throw at marketing your online presence, forget it, you will never even scratch the surface, if some company gives you bullshit about the must have Facebook, twitter and rest accounts, run for the hills, these usually are the wannabe online marketers, with sharp tongues (usually forked) and snappy suits. You can get business from social, but it’s limited, search is and has been #1 from the start and will continue for a very long time.

Ask yourself what you do when you want something, whether on your phone, laptop or desktop, you search first.

Yellow Pages Getting Dragged into Digital

So the Yellow Pages are finally getting it, I spoke with these people when I first arrived in Canada in 2007 at their request and told them as much.

But like most businesses here the truth hurts, YES you are behind a few years and playing catch up, but at least your starting to play now. The idea of a cocky little Brit telling them what they need to do with their business in a new digital world does not go down very well, they always know best.

So they have managed to get rid of the Auto Trader to the Brits to pay off mounting debts, losing $500k on what they paid for it, (bet they wished they listened now) but to be honest the British Autotader is a lot better, so may be something to look forward to in Canada.

Sensis CEO Bruce Akhurst broadcast a new strategy for the directories arm of Telstra this week stateing

“The marketing and advertising environment confronting small businesses today is totally different to what it has been in the past. Gone are the days where a local business owner wanting to advertise their business would simply advertise in the Yellow Pages, paint contact details on their company car and print business cards,” he said. (No shit Sherlock)

“The explosion of technology and advertising channels, and the popularity of digital devices, has created a complex digital world that small businesses must be part of to ensure they are found by customers looking for their services.”

Well better late than never so they say, so when the Yellow Pages girls & boys come knocking for your advertising dollars, dont forget this is as new to them as it is to you, Remember experience counts, seek out the Orange in your area.

Online Marketing for 2011

And with the Happy New Year celebrations behind us all, it’s that time again where people make those resolutions to themselves to lose weight, be a happier person, exercise more etc. The very nature of resolutions is a noble one, but unfortunately most people shoot too high, disappoint themselves for not being able to perform or maintain and end up quitting all together. The best method, is baby steps of course.

Of course I can’t tell you if you need to exercise more, or eat better, but I can promise that if you take baby steps involved with your online marketing, you will see results, and results which will leave you very happy and in a very strong position for the next holiday shopping spree.

Your first baby step, should involve actually breaking down your current online agenda. Is your website up to date? Has your site been built with tons of active elements like Flash or Java menus? Is it easy to navigate your website? It’s hard, but try and imagine visiting your website for the first time as a new visitor, can you find information quickly and easily? It’s a small, but extremely important step in reprioritizing your online efforts in the new year. If you can realize what needs to be fixed after all, you can move forward with confidence.

Your next step, after having a good honest look at your website, should be a stark examination of your current online marketing efforts. Are you an AdWords afficionado? Does your web copy read naturally, or is it full of technical jargon about your product or services? It’s a fine line to sell yourself online to new clients, you need to be able to explain yourself as simply as possible, as accurate and concise as can be.

Now that you have a clear staging point from which to begin, it’s time to bring in the experts. SEO and online marketing experts at Fresh Traffic draw on over 25 years of experience in providing Search Engine Optimization & Internet marketing solutions. As specialists in Online Brand Development & Search Engine Optimization, Fresh Traffic makes the Internet an accessible & successful addition to all businesses, driving more unique visitors & brand impressions to websites. We’re the best at bringing you the traffic you desire to your site, start the new year right and let 2011 be your best online year yet.

The World won’t wait Winnipeg

Where are you Winnipeg? You’re at the geographic center (more or less) of North America, in a position that with a little work could and should be home to every global corporations office. All because of where you are. Costs aren’t extravagant, the weather is tolerable so long as you dress appropriately and the people are friendly (like our license plates!). But where are you?

Winnipeg businesses are few and far between in the new world. The internet, the world wide web, the 24/7 storefront of the entire world. There’s been money pumped into ‘Selling the city’ yet I mention Winnipeg in conversations and get a lot of ‘Where’s that?’. The most apalling time to get the token response is when you’re speaking to Canadians. So what’s the problem, what’s the solution? You’re running against yourselves Winnipeg, you’re trying to play catch up to the rest of the world, who has already been in the race online for years now. This isn’t a ‘Tortoise and the Hare’ metaphor, it’s not a post with a moral message. It’s plain, blank truth.

It’s a race online, as it is in any business metric to be noticed. And the harsh reality of it is, Winnipeg still doesn’t get it. There are a few, a handful of sparks who have taken up the charge for themselves online to be found. To shake the tree of the SERPs and claw their way to the top. It’s not something that happens overnight, it’s not something that costs $250 and a week of keyword stuffing into urls for your website. It takes the skills, experience and knowledge of the SEO experts in your home town Winnipeg.

You need to be found Winnipeg, and who better to get you where you need to be than your local SEO experts at Fresh Traffic. It’s time to pick up your socks and get to running, because the pack won’t wait for you, they’re just getting further and further ahead.

How To Compare Search Results – Ensure Proper Context First

There’s been some talk lately about a story that the New York Times did recently about how Googles ranking algorithm didn’t work right, or isn’t, when it allowed an unscupulous business to list highly in the SERPs for multiple terms. As a bone of contention, I’ll first toss in the black hat argument, that any search can be “gamed” if the long term is unimportant. But secondly, the “SEO experts” commenting on this story are frustrating to in the way their articles have been written.

First off, SEO is not an exact science. There’s no specific do this and you get number 1 formula, as each search, each niche, each query is different for each person using Google/Bing/Yahoo etc. There is the best practices of course, which the search engines have available on their sites for your reading pleasure, but there was a string of, ‘evidence’ I’ll call it, by one of the SEOs that I need to rant about.

Search, for it’s simplicity, is a complicated beast. With Google continually tinkering with their algorithm, Bing doing their own changes and manipulations and who knows what else going on around the globe, it can seem like you’re using a firehose to put out birthday candles sometimes. And the article that irked me the most, used a string of searches to ‘prove’ their point. Using screenshots, arrows and breaking down the results page each time to prove that if only Google did it their way, search would be better for the shopping inclined. My issue with the article comes from the searches performed that were used as proof. In one shot for example they were looking for ‘mechanics in winnipeg’ and in the second they looked for ‘mechanics winnipeg’, after which you can include arrows and screenshots to show “See now if you only did it my way..” The issue is, those are two very different searches that were performed. Those weren’t the searches used of course, but being that Fresh Traffic is located in Winnipeg, I took some liberty, just as they did, to prove my point. Those two searches, return two different SERPs, and two different amount of results numbering in the thousands. When you add the ‘in’ operator to a Google search, the engine defers to it’s newer Google Places product, and tries to give results more akin to a shopping or services directory. with reviews, phone numbers, addresses and Maps pinpoints. Performing the search without the ‘in’ operator gives you a mix of organic results and Places results mixed in, more of a thrown together guess from Google of what you’re looking for.

So as for being creative on how you tried to prove your point, I guess kudos for displaying a poor SEO skillset to those who don’t know any better. But there are those of us in the industry who know better, and despite all intents and purposes your hat is a shade darker today.

Local Search Marketing – Google Places Optimization

Its an absolute must for every small business owner. Gone are the days of customers finding you in the YellowPages.

Google is the new Yellow pages! Can potential customers or patients find you on top?

Local Search is replacing the use of traditional Yellow Pages, in fact, the internet is now the primary source of local business information.

According to a study conducted, more users utilize online search engines to find local business information than the number of users actually using a print yellow pages directory.

What is Local Internet Marketing? Local Internet Marketing is suited for businesses who need targeted marketing in their local town or region. For example, a Winnipeg Hair Salon is only interested in new clients from the local area and would not benefit from being #1 in Google for Hair Salon nationwide.

There are lots of web design companies out there, but many aren’t great at SEO (Search Engine Optimization.) There also are lots of SEO companies out there, that may be good at SEO, but they don’t know how to get you in the Google 7 Pack . We do! It takes a special multi-faceted approach that nets great results!

New Google Results

It’s not a new trend that Google is always tweaking the way their search works, or how the results are displayed. And they’ve made another change live, which drives home the importance of being certain your website is optimized.

Normally when you conduct a search on Google, the results you’ll receive are a mix of the most relevant websites which contain your terms. Occasionally, when it was applicable, the same website may show up twice, if the algorithm deemed it applied. This recent change however, can return up to 4 results from the same website with shorter descriptive text in the results. The remaining results on the page will be the other varied relevant websites. Now why should this concern someone working on climbing the SERPs? Well, when you perform a search, the results page you’ll see contains the top 10 results. And if 4 of those top 10 are from the same website, odds are you may not have even made page one. The change is recent with Google, and if you’re ranking 5 and less on page one of their results, if your not diligent with your SEO you may soon find yourself on page two!

Page one of the Google SERPs is a difficult nut to crack, and with this recent change it’s added another level of finesse which has to be used as your site is optimized. When interested small business owners reach out to the SEO experts, it’s often they balk a little when they learn what the actual cost is to hire a professional; but if you think a pro is expensive, try hiring an amateur. Search engine optimization is the best return on investment in the online market place, so what is it worth to you to be found.

SEO Tip – Social Engine Optimization

Earlier in the week Facebooks own version of SEOsocial engine optimization, to turn a phrase, lit up in the newsworld as their version of tackling Google. Seeing however, that the idea is powered somewhat, by users liking a page, it doesn’t seem to have any cards on the search giant. That doesn’t mean however, that the idea shouldn’t be ignored; social optimization is just as important to your business provided you have the Facebook and Twitter accounts.

The average internet user is already notorious for fast browsing and merely scanning content by nature. Add into the mix, the chaos of social media, and the attention span for the content in front of them drops again.

Creating compelling, relevant, and provoking content is a major key to success in gaining a high amount of links, votes, and traffic to your content. Not forgetting however, style and structure for your content, is a major factor to being successful in social media. We’ll go over just a few basic points in terms of social optimization, to help your pages receive the “Like” that you desire.

Try using shorter sentences – Writing your most relevant, compelling, attractive information in short, informational phrases can be the turning point in keeping a user from clicking that back button. Keeping your key phrases and termsin shorter, easier to digest sentences and paragraphs allows the searcher to quickly determine that you meet their requirements on the social web.

Table of Contents – If you’ve shortened your information as much as possible, and still have miles upon miles of text, construct a table of contents and with anchors within. This allows for quick navigation to interesting sections within, and provides that extra usability that can be very helpful.

Bullet points and Lists – Breaking your more complex portions into bullet points or lists allows for quick and simple reading. Breaking down your page down in such a fashion also lends to easy linking within the page and site.

Photos and images – Using amazing imagery within your pages helps to draw visitors to your page, while your written content is designed to keep it. “A picture is worth 1000 words” afterall. Just be sure your images, are relevant to the content.

Social media is here to stay, and it’s best to get used to the idea. Your pages and content need to be attractive, intelligent, and compelling with their first impression. Taking the time to be sure that your social optimization is up to par is well worth the time investment. Building a loyal visitor and fan base in the social media sector of the web, will ensure long term viability in the marketplace.

Prepping your SEO for 2010

In continuation from yesterdays post about prepping for the new year, and being ready to take the bull by the horns online, below you’ll find a couple of tips to be aware of in regards to getting ready. An insight or two, as well as some advice to bear in mind as your advertising year starts anew.

An easily forgotten fact, is that web crawlers from the search engines treat each individual page of a website as it’s own entity. This means that rather than regarding the optimization of your website as a whole, it can be more productive to think of it as the optimization of each page. Using this approach is much more involved and meticulous care needs to be taken, but, once all of your pages have been optimized, your entire site will be search engine friendly, and loaded with relevant content.

An important SEO fact every business owner should know is that true, organic SEO, requires a multitude techniques, and time for those techniques to work if an SEO campaign is really going to be successful. Using a single SEO method may help improve your results a little; but if you want your business to be ranked highly by the search engines for a long time and to increase the amount of traffic that visits your site then proper identification and implementation of acceptable SEO techniques will be required. It is also important to note, that rankings can, and do, fluctuate day to day within the search results page. It’s impossible to guarantee the number 1 spot in the results, but when Fresh works your site, with our proven organic optimization techniques, you will climb the results in ranking.

The third basic fact in search engine optimization that you should always have in mind, is that SEO is a continuous process. It does not stop, because there’s always another website, another business, and/or another competitor knocking on your door online; trying to take your place. Once high rankings have been achieved through an efficiently run SEO campaign, if this optimization is suddenly halted then it is likely that the rankings achieved will drop too. You could liken the effect much the same as watering a flower garden properly and with care, to suddenly stopping. All of your efforts in raising that product, will be for nothing. Google, Yahoo, and Bing are constantly changing and developing their technology and new techniques to help be ranked are also constantly being developed. If you want to remain on top, then you must remain updated on all developments and make the necessary changes to your SEO campaign.

At Freshtraffic, we’re constantly monitoring our clients sites, and if a slip in ratings is found consistently, and not a momentary lapse in a reindexing, we will retool the site to return to, and retain the previously held high ranking.
