SEO Basics – The Beginning

Optimizing your site takes time, effort, and knowledge. If you’re willing to take the time and learn, apply the effort to your site, then allow this little bit of knowledge to help you with those first few baby steps into the internet jungle.

We’re going to go way down to the beginning..

Keep your site friendly for the engines, there’s a ton of scripts, code, and fancy tricks that look great, but the search engines will pass over. Be careful with these common search engine obstacles

* Flash sites/elements – Some web designers love it, site visitors have a love it or hate it feel, and most importantly, search engines cannot read it. If you are determined to incorporate flash into your site, be sure to also include keyword text for the flash page/elements. Home pages and entire sites done entirely in flash are completely invisible to search engines. What is the value of a site that is invisible to the spiders?

* Dynamic URLs – Typically these urls are associated with a database driven website (www.yoursite.com/143?=5aswe for example) Although the engines can read them, they won’t dig too deeply. Simple URLs are Google/Bing/Yahoo friendly URLs.

* JavaScript menu navigation – A dated style to build off of, but your web developer will know about this type of menu. The engines don’t follow JavaScript links, so avoid them as often as possible for navigation links (Home, About, Products, etc.).

* Write for People, not bots/spiders
Is your website an effective marketing or sales tool? Or has it been crammed full of keywords and doesn’t read like a person has written it? Once you’re able to get visitors to your site, compelling, relevant content will keep them on your site. Possibilities include making a purchase, sign-up for news or promotional email letters, add the site to their bookmarks (to make it a regular reading stop), add your site to their Twitter or Facebook accounts, etc.

Short, simple, and extremely basic. The above points are merely a drop in the sea of SEO, but seeing as every website out there is just another fish, why not do your best to be the hunter amongst the prey?

More to come..

Search Marketing Strategies

Understanding what your competitors are doing in terms of online strategy is an absolute priority when launching a new website that is entering a competitive space. By knowing what your rivals are doing in their SEO and social media space, not only will be able to discern their online marketing strategy, but you can also emulate what is working for them, and generate internal ideas to stay proactive.

Furthermore, by understanding what your competition is doing in terms of on-site SEO, link building, social media marketing, developing third party properties and other search marketing tactics; you can also identify tactics which are working from them (or not working for them), that you can improve upon, and thrive from in your overall marketing strategy.

And who doesn’t love pretending to be a spy every once in a while?

The first step to identify your competition is by checking out the search results for your keywords for which you’d like to be listed. Do not look only at keywords which drive the most traffic, but also the longtail search terms.

After you have identified the sites you need to monitor as part of your intel, start looking into the on-site SEO factors which help them rank in the search engines. You may find not only what they are doing right, but what you are doing wrong. When forming a competitive SEO report, it’s suggested to include your own site in the report and even having a third party have a look at your results, say an SEO consultant.

Not only do onsite tactics assist with the ranking of a website, but more importantly the off-site SEO tactics benefit the competitive advantage to boost a site from the bottom of the front page on Google, into the top five.

By discerning the off-site SEO tactics, and social media tactics, you can get a strong sense for the link building strategies, their participation in blogs, sites they may own which are harnessing social media traffic, if SEM is working for them, and their standing on Delicious, Digg and in vertically targeted social networks. All of these factors have a direct influence on search engine rankings and you will not only learn what your competition is doing, but you can find, and use what they are not. And by identifying these holes, oversights or even genius ideas … and applying them to your marketing strategy, you can propel yourself within your industry.

This can be a lot of information to monitor, and you’ll probably want to add more industry specific terms to your research dependent upon how SEO savvy your market is. But in the long run by documenting this information now, and revisiting it, you will have a pinpoint idea of the tactics your rivals are utilizing, which they are not, and even what they are changing to keep up.

Some additional recconaissance you can do, monitor their listings on job search engines to identify the internal positions they are hiring for or have, like SEO Manager or Social Media Marketing Assistant. In this way, you may gather some insight as to what they are planning in the future, which may assist you with getting the jump on the competition.

Retailer 'turns to internet marketing over TV'

The Gap has chosen to forgo traditional television advertising for its new fashion line, instead opting for social media as its marketing channel.

Born to Fit, a new line of denim wear, will be using Facebook as its main advertising channel in order to reach consumers.

Created by AKQA, the campaign will feature banner ads placed on blogs to state what each page is there to do. The banners on popsugar.com – a lifestyle and entertainment site – state the journal is ‘born to strategise’.

Although the campaign will also use more traditional marketing methods such as cinema, print and outdoor ads, their purpose is to send more consumers to the Facebook page. Once there, users will find a video of Rada Shadick – Gap’s fit engineer – explaining the inspiration behind the new line.

Experts in the online marketing sphere recently suggested that it was necessary for digital advertisers to harness the power of social networking as it offered good campaign opportunities.

Innovation is alive and well in Canada

Recession is a time for battening down the hatches, staying the course and avoiding unnecessary expenses — right?

Not according to Canada’s entrepreneurs, who are in a fighting mood as they await a recovery. In a new survey, 61% of business owners said they are investing in innovation and/or research and development this year, which may surprise business-watchers who think small business owners are innovation laggards.

But business owners are always looking at new product ideas and tweaking their service offerings. Designing a new type of sandal, hiring an SEO consultant to beef up a Web site, or recruiting a student to make cold calls all count as innovation in a small company, where you fall behind whenever you stop moving forward.

The Canadian Small Business Monitor, published last week by American Express, breaks ground by putting a price tag on innovation investment. An impressive 13% of the 500 business owners surveyed said they will spend more than 10% of revenues on innovation or research and development this year; 10% expect to spend between 6% and 10%; and 28% plant to invest 1% to 5%.

Another reassuring finding is only 19% of business owners said they will spend nothing on it “because innovation/ R&D does not apply to my business;” while 13% said they don’t have the budget for it, and 7% were undecided.

(That last group probably includes the dry cleaner that tore your favourite jacket, the e-commerce Web site that lost your order and the ad agency that produced the Stephane Dion video last December.)

Overall, 40% of the businesses surveyed consider innovation a “high priority,” while 8% call it a “top priority.” Generally, the larger the company, the higher priority they place on innovation.

Traditional outbound marketing using direct mail, print advertising, and phonebook ads are becoming more expensive and less effective. Today, consumers use search engines, blogs, and social media to learn about products and services.

Website Marketing & Internet Marketing – What You Should Know

If you’re a website owner, then you probably already know that websites need plenty of love and attention. Then you have to think about how you use your website to get the best return on investment. Most companies pass the request on to the marketing team in the hope that they can work wonders in implementing a successful marketing strategy. This isn’t always the case, as normal marketing employees haven’t got the faintest idea on where to start to help market a website for the internet.

There is a phrase for one of the best parts of internet marketing, this is search engine optimisation(SEO). This is when a company makes changes to your website and a range of other strategies to help your website appear as high as possible in the listings in major search engines such as Google. Because search engines are still relitavely new in the world of business it can be difficult to find resources to help you, or even people to find who are willing to help. I can imagine there are not many people out there who even knew what SEO was let alone think that they needed it.

There are 100’s of people out there that claim to be someone who can help. Don’t be fooled by techincal talk from these guys as they don’t generally have the results to back up their claims. If you decide you need to look at marketing for your website then make sure the company you choose, are not scared to show previous customers or results. Always make sure you recieve testimonials from these customers to otherwise you could be sending an awful lot of money down the well and not getting much in return.
