Lots of noise being made in the social arena over the last week or so, Google lauding it’s social network, Google+, by saying that over 90 million people have joined so far. Reports have been growing online that the process to sign up for a Gmail account has changed from being just a simple matter of choosing a login name and a password. To say it’s irked people who were previously considering getting a Gmail account would be putting it mildly. A work around was quickly found for those interested in only a Gmail account, but that functionality obviously will not last. And although I haven’t noticed any changes in my search results, there are other reports of people saying that Google+ is taking over their SERPs. It’s gotten bad enough that just today, Facebook and Twitter developers have released a ‘tool’ to remove the social results from your pages named of all things, “don’t be evil”. The tool is a bookmarklet that you place in your shortcuts bar which can ‘fix’ your results if you’ve found they’re full of Google+ results.
Throwing another curve into the already twisted recent social signals that Google is putting out, in the earnings report that was just put out, Larry Page was ecstatic about the reported ‘gains’ they were making in the social arena. It’s not really a surprise that Page would be so excited about Google+, as when he took the helm last year he was throwing out big bonuses for improvements on the Google social front. It’s a rocky start for the online giants, but it’s a start which will make 2012 an impressive year for social media.

What they say: Blogging is one of the quickest and easiest ways to forge an identity for yourself online. Blogs allow you to share your expertise with your visitors and it encourages them to see you as a leading authority in your industry sector. As you build up your blog with opinion pieces, news stories and reviews you will create an online resource for your blog visitors.
Fact: Takes your time and money, time is money or employ someone to do it, another salary.
While there is a lot of information and help out there to get you started, do not be taken in by all the BS that people and company’s shovel out. Sure Google also has SEO guidelines which cover what you should and should not be doing in order to create a well optimized website. Check it out Rand at SEOMoz have a multitude of free blogs, videos and podcasts on their website to help people understand the basic (and more advanced) SEO techniques too, but the cold hard facts are it takes time, money and knowledge to be a real player. As I have said many times, pay peanuts and you will get monkey’s.
As a small business if you don’t have at least $20k a year to throw at marketing your online presence, forget it, you will never even scratch the surface, if some company gives you bullshit about the must have Facebook, twitter and rest accounts, run for the hills, these usually are the wannabe online marketers, with sharp tongues (usually forked) and snappy suits. You can get business from social, but it’s limited, search is and has been #1 from the start and will continue for a very long time.
Ask yourself what you do when you want something, whether on your phone, laptop or desktop, you search first.
When I arrived in Canada 4 years ago, the first people to contact me was a company working with a big yellow book. I had a lovely lunch meeting with the people, I gave them my thoughts & ideas on how they could move forward into this new digital world capitulating the planet and of course my contact information.
Now, as most people who know will testify, I don’t usually sugarcoat anything, shoot from the hip is a term used a lot here in Canada and I do, It’s just the way I am.
So today as I watch the demise of a once great institution taking place, I ask myself could I really of helped? The answer MOST DEFINATLY.
If fact, with a little tweaking they could rule the search engine results pages, seriously, and that’s were the real dollars are, plus advertisers would flock back to be at the top of Google.
Now could the hierarchy on the east coast put up with a straight talking Brit? now that’s another question, they could’nt the first time. I did foresee the autotrader’s problems and mentioned it, they lost money on that one. I also told them about the Google Adwords reseller program/agreement they have and what would happen with that a full 12months before it did, psychic, no, Internet experience and common business sense.
They were great at selling advertising in a book every business wanted to be in, there not very good at the Internet game. They may have some good technicians, programmers and traditional marketers in house and they certainly have a few pretty faces, Ive seen them first hand But they don’t have anyone near capable for the online strategy stuff that could relight the company back into a leader they once were.
Need proof? how much have they recently spent on videos, marketing, brochures, Adwords etc promoting the new search engine solutions program, Mucho $$$$ and where do the list organically on search? They should be totally dominating this term.
Now, solution, get expert help, pay the dollars, it wont be cheap, take the company ego’s out of the room, don’t expect a slick marketer in a pinstripe suit showing you a PowerPoint or YouTube video, these guys know shit, the ones who know in this game don’t look or work like that, we just know.
It’s never over until the fat lady sings, do something now or you will be hearing those dulcet tones sooner than you think.

Major companies from Nestle to Ford are increasing the proportion of their ad spend on the Internet to the detriment of traditional press ads and big ad agencies are scrambling to evolve.
The changes have given birth to a slew of tech start-ups trying to come up with more sophisticated ways to match ads to consumers, often with sophisticated data mining techniques and algorithms.
While traditional advertising groups jostled for awards at a recent annual industry gathering in Cannes, the year’s biggest star was a newcomer to the beaches: the social network Facebook.
The company has gone from nowhere a few years ago to become the biggest single seller of online display advertising in the United States with more than $2 billion in revenues this year, according to research firm eMarketer.
“If I have a good experience with a brand I’ll tell a person offline — I might tell my friend — but if I do it on Facebook the average person is telling 130 people,” said Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg.
Previous long running CEO of Google Eric Schmidt during a conference yesterday had a lot of thoughts to share about the online world.
Facebook for example, had connections to all of the friends you have, have ever had and even the friends you forgot about. They’re almost all there ready for you to find and become reacquainted with. Microsoft has their finger in the business pie so to speak, as that is their strongest market. Amazong Schmidt shared, is seen as the largest “store front” on the internet and Apple makes pretty things.
For all of the merits he bestowed on his comrades in the online world, he was also quick to add that as strong as they are, one of the companies being discussed was out of the expanding loop of the internet. The giant who just seems to be missing the bus is Microsoft, they just don’t seem to be using the same “platforming strategy”, as Schmidt called it, as the rest of the bunch.
The discussion however, was not limited to Microsofts perceived weakness in the current digital age. Schmidt in a rather candid moment declared, “I screwed up.” Of the laundry list of complaints people have had the world over about the search giant and their practices and procedures, the mistake Schmidt was speaking of was missing the boat to the social party. That’s not to say that Google is a one trick pony of course, just that he missed the social boom so to speak.
Schmidt has since passed the CEO reins to Larry Page, who’ve shifted the companies focus towars social with a very focused vision of becoming a serious player.
An advertising metric which has become more and more available for business owners to use has been social search. Facebook, MySpace to a degree, and mobile access to these online communities comprises a network of millions of people; both locally and beyond. Google is by far the king of search online, but Facebook recently has put a twist on the angle of social search. In October of 2004 Facebook applied to patent what was called “curated search” but for all intent and purpose is social search. As of this past February, the patent was granted.
The language of the filing is as such: “Visual tags for search results generated from social network information.”
If that seems somewhat broad and far reaching, you’re not alone. Digging through the information contained within the patent application it’s explained more thoroughly. Here is the definition of search via Facebooks patent application:
“A key metric in evaluating the performance of search engines is relevance of the search results. Search engine developers are always striving to deliver search results that are relevant to the search query being processed. A frequently used technique is analyzing how web pages link to each other. A web page gets a ranking boost based on the number of other web pages that are linked to it. Click-through rates of search results are analyzed in some search engines. The general rule is: the higher the click-through rate, the higher the ranking.”
And their definition of social search is defined as well.
“According to an embodiment of the invention, search results, including sponsored links and algorithmic search results, are generated in response to a query, and are ranked based on the frequency of clicks on the search results by members of social network who are within a predetermined degree of separation from the member who submitted the query.”
The idea is that relevance is dependant partly on the number of clicks your friends give to links, as well as how closely tied you are to your friends. The awarding of the patent likely won’t vastly alter the social search game, it does prove however that Zuckerberg had search in mind the entire time for Facebook; the company was launched in February of 2004, the application made only a few months later in October.

While many are writing Charlie off as having a mental meltdown and suffering career suicide, what he really is actually asking for is a 50% pay increase.
Sound crazy? Maybe, maybe not. Charlie’s hit show “Two and a Half Men” is the most-watched comedy in prime time averaging 15.2 million viewers. It pulls $207,000 per ad. Last season, it generated $155.1 million in CBS ad revenue according to Kantar Media.

The dot com boom soon went bang for a large number of websites. MySpace looks to be the latest casualty as its popularity seems to have dwindled significantly in the shadow of giants like Twitter and Facebook.
A partnership has recently been announced that will see both social network sites (Facebook and MySpace) working closely together and the sums involved have not been disclosed as far as I know at this time. This unlikely alliance will mean that MySpace users will be able to login in to Facebook through their MySpace account. Sound quite cool doesn’t it but on the flip side it will also at the same time allow over 600 million Facebook users to move their likes and social bits and bobs over to MySpace.

We’ve seen mergers of large online entities before and although Facebook is the monster site at the moment, we have to look back at times when Friends Reunited were also the massive site of the day.
Although still immensely popular it’s not being promoted anywhere near as much as it has been and there was a certain “gimmick” factor to the site where you would look at it on and off and then never go back. Until, however a year later there was an update by someone and you just had to have a nose and see what they were up to.
According to one very experienced and well regarded Internet expert, Dr Jeffrey Cole, this joining of sites may be pointless as Facebook could only have five years of dominance left in the social market before the next “big thing” comes bowling through and take over. Dr Jeffrey Cole hails from the World Internet project and predicted the demise of MySpace so if you’re thinking of buying shares in “the social network” make sure it’s for short term gain and not a long term investment.
