So I’m searching through online and decided to have a look who’s advertising on Kijii in Winnipeg if anyone for SEO Services, sure enough we have a few people/companies advertising, I came across one a Winnipeg Tech company I have never heard of offering Guaranteed Page 1, with premium packages, websites and domain name sales for very little money, they even promised to recover ranking for you.
So intrigued I had to look further, sure enough it was a new domain, registered for 1 year in Feb 2014, ok straight away that’s a red flag to me, so I looked further, let’s go to google and type the domain name in, sure enough no ranking, not even the website came up, only the address they use on their Kijii ads, but it does have a local number, no address and just one page promising the earth.
Now having been in Winnipeg for 7 years now I have seen SEO experts and companies come and go, change their name and so on, so this one is probably no different, at a guess someone in a basement or another country targeting my local market, either way not very good.
But to Winnipeggers this might look great, we do tend to be bargain hunters here, but what pisses me about people like this is, it’s these kind of people that get the industry a bad name, they come in promising the world, we have had a few in Winnipeg the last few years, you tell people but they don’t listen, rip a few companies and leave and we get to pick-up the piece or it frightens them off from the net after being burned.
So business people of Manitoba, if it looks too good to be true, it usually is. Please do due diligence, go to Google, type in the name and see if you can get any more information on them, then search for what it is they do and promise, if they don’t list themselves, how are they going to list your company, it’s simple really.
Beware of big RED PHONES, Just saying
In the last week or so we have had the Super Bowl & the blackout, Tiger & Phil winning their first tournaments of the year in great style and of course the usual gibberish around the Winnipeg Internet industry.
As most of you will know, occasionally I like to have a rant, today is the day
Having been around the net now as a marketer for 17 years, I have seen a lot come and go, Google came, AltaVista went, Facebook came and Friends United you get the gist, it’s no different in Winnipeg.
I have seen companies and individuals start in Winnipeg, then go, but they always seem to turn up again like bad pennies as some other company or expert consultant usually in Social Media, SEO or Marketing and it gets very tiring, I cannot believe that Winnipeg businesses keep falling for it.
One year there in college or shelf filling at Walmart, waiting in restaurants or selling flowers, the next there experts online peddling webinars or circuit speakers, really, do real people fall for this BS, In Winnipeg Yes.
People who know me or have dealt with my company know I don’t beat about the bush, I say things as they are, yes the truth hurts sometimes folks, my only concern is my client and the well being of there business and online return on investment.
I don’t care too much about money, it’s not our companies driving force, doing the job well and the client making money usually brings its rewards, enough to pay the wages and rent anyways.
We have friends in the city and probably a lot more enemies, mainly due to me speaking my mind, apologies to my sales manager, but how long can this charade go on for?
We have never really advertised ourselves too much, not joined the numerous clubs or groups in the city, done speeches even when asked or webinars for that matter, why, we never had to and to be fair I would probably struggle to get through it without a F word being thrown in there. I did join the Chamber for a few years after being asked, which did nothing at all for my company, maybe I faces just did not fit.
The truth of the matter is we had it all online, Yes the internet where 92% of people look before buying anything, and so as the old saying goes, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. So straight from the horse’s mouth are the reasons you could be missing out on all those top spots on Google, Bing & Yahoo not to mention the thousands of $$$$$ people are looking to spend on your products.

You Really Should Get on Board.
An interesting patent was being discussed lately, which may be related to all of the most recent shifts in Googles index, which seem to shake up the rankings pages every few weeks.
A basic description of how the patent reads:
Rather than allow the rankings to respond immediately and directly to those changes, the system that would change rankings in unexpected, counter-intuitive ways – while the rankings change from a first position through transition positions and to the final “target rank” position.
It sounds a little strange to think that the algorithm would work in an almost backwards way, but it’s an interesting idea. It’s a way for Google to monitor situations where spam may be an issue in a websites position, whether it be through links or content. and as the last portion of the analysis describes,
significant changes in position continue to happen even though there is no change in page’s ranking factors
Happy Birthday to Fresh
It’s been five, eventful years now since Fresh has made it’s landing in Winnipeg, and we’ve steadily become the online leader in the city. We’ve seen the construction of a new museum and stadium, the return of the long lost Jets, and a steadily growing business sector.
In terms of online change and growth, the internet has brought us nearly a billion Facebook users, the introduction of an alternative with Google+ and many changes and updates to the way people access information on the web. The growth of online search, and businesses using their websites to capture their audience has been increasingly growing in Winnipeg. While it was a little bit slow in the beginning to show locals the way, we’re surely and steadily getting there with more and more businesses and people coming online each day. It’s been a great beginning Winnipeg, and we look forward to many more to come.
