Habits are hard to break.

Some more than others.

I suppose its the change itself that is the really difficult part.  Then in walks your Yellow Pages or Free Press rep.  Ahhh.  A familiar face in the new world of Interwebs, Likes and mobile devices.  Your cheque for marketing services practically writes itself as you’ve been paying 1 or both of these entities since your Pappy’s Pappy’s Pappy started this business moons ago.

At one point these products made sense.  How else could a consumer quickly locate a list of plumbers or car dealers to consider doing business with?  These were a person’s only options:

“I want a car.  Let’s see what mad deals are being advertised in the Free Press.  Even better – I’ll go to their “Auto” section, which I know will provide me all I need to know about the world of cars in Winnipeg.”

“Uh oh…my toilet is overflowing.  Better grab the Yellow Pages and look up a plumber!”

Yep, that’s how it was done.  Old faithfuls.
But when was the last time you did this?  Bet its been a while – unless?…
you fell you into a well and lost phone reception and thankfully landed on a stack of old Yellow Page directories and Free Press issues that cushioned your fall and allowed you to make a fire to keep you warm and send smoke signals till you were rescued.
Other than that common experience, I’m guessing you no longer reach for these past resources when you are in need of a product or service. Do you think your customers do?

So – why are you still so quick to pay them to handle your marketing?

The answer – better the devil you know.  And that’s exactly what they’re banking on.  Why else have they changed their tune to suddenly be “internet marketers”?  Because they know you’re used to writing them a cheque.

I know there is a part of you – deep in the pit of your stomach that can’t help but ask “do they really know what they’re doing?  How can they make me a leader online if they are open to working with my competitors?

“Free that inner voice!  Let them soar to the surface.  That is Dr. Reason trying to smack you into reality.  Yellow Pages and Free Press are simply preying on Winnipegger’s reluctance to change.

Tell me if this sounds familiar:

“How about I give you a full page ad for the price of a 1/4 page ad if you try out our internet marketing services for the year?”

To which you reply:

“Oooo…wow!  I used to pay a whack of cash for that size ad.  Now I’m getting that and internet marketing.  I should go buy a lottery ticket.”

You should because you’ll lose that money too.  At least these two transactions will have something in common.

Quit falling victim to your fear of the internet by using old media as your bridge

This is exactly what they are preying on.  All they want is your money – that’s why you haven’t seen the same sales rep 2 years in a row.  Because they churn em and burn em – there’s no relationship with your business- they don’t care if you succeed – they don’t care if they already are working with 2 other direct competitors of yours – they only care about your money.

Its time to break your buying habit.
Meet new faces.
Kick fears ass.
Trust me – you’ll be just fine

Yahoo investors changed their minds again last night, instead of selling its large stake in Alibaba & Yahoo Japan which would give them a massive tax bill, Marissa Mayer has been told to sell Yahoo itself. That would mean the Yahoo stakeholders would own an empty shell for the stock of two companies that they already have access directly through the public markets, plus $5.5 billion in cash.

Is a buyer going to snap it up cheap, is there going to be more layoffs, and is Yahoo dead?

Time will tell.

Search engine optimization (SEO) has gone through a series of evolutions over the years. Older tactics, which focused on keyword-based optimization and black-hat practices, have become obsolete, and modern strategies, which focus on user experience, have come to replace them. Throughout its history, SEO has been a cost-efficient and incredibly valuable strategy for business owners of all industries.

But despite the strategy’s simplified development, many business owners are still too intimidated by the perceived difficulty of SEO to follow through with it. SEO is a time-intensive strategy, and it does demand significant attention, but it has reached a point where it’s no longer difficult. With the right mentality and a sound commitment, any business owner can start building an SEO campaign – and reaping the many benefits.

This was a story in the Globe & Mail this week, simplified SEO, so good luck with this people 🙂

Hiring an SEO firm can be stressful. With prices ranging anywhere from several hundred to tens of thousands of dollars per month, depending on your specific needs, it is difficult to hear an SEO firm tell you it will take a few months before you can expect to see results. How do you know if they’re doing real work, or ripping you off? If you’ve hired an SEO firm before and had a bad experience, you have anxiety added upon anxiety as you go through the hiring process again. In these circumstances, it is perfectly understandable that you would be attracted to the idea of a guarantee. Other service businesses, from auto mechanics to shipping companies, offer guarantees, so why wouldn’t SEO firms?

As the owner of an SEO firm, I’ve been tempted to offer guarantees myself. Don’t my clients deserve a guarantee? And wouldn’t it be great for marketing? It would help those clients who are hesitant about the risk involved with SEO to decide to use us rather than a competitor who didn’t offer a guarantee, right? But several years ago when I started researching SEO guarantees, I found reasons to be hesitant about offering one myself. The first reason can be found in my spam filter, and probably in yours, too. Here’s a view of what I see in mine:

In the past, the actual content included on a website was often given a low priority over the inclusion of keywords at a specific density. Improvements made to algorithms included by major search engines now make it more important than ever that each piece of SEO content is well written and presented correctly when using a template. Updating content on a regular basis is a good way of making sure potential clients return on a regular basis to a particular Site is always a good idea, with well-presented and accurate titles and pictures also an important part of web design.

big-pictureFocusing on the detail instead of the bigger picture is usually the first mistake a new client makes when starting a seo campaign. SEO is a combination of several factors and no single factor can guarantee an increase or decrease in search ranking. Therefore, it is always best to implement the basics of SEO first and try to get your site optimized as a whole, rather than focusing on ultra specific details such as trying to assess how much more weight an H1 header tag has versus an H2 tag.

Always try to implement best practice SEO when possible and don’t lose the bigger picture when getting into the detail. (Hint again)

By correcting these avoidable mistakes, you can better optimize your brand’s SEO strategy to ensure you are seen and heard.

Just think about how buyer behavior has changed in recent times. When you decide to buy a car, do you rush straight to the car dealer? Of course not! You’ll spend hours online, researching various car makes and models.

For decades, the music industry thrived on a successful model — selling physical copies of song collections (CDs, tapes, records, etc.). Then, the internet changed everything.

The ability to download digital mp3 files transformed the music industry and paved the way for the iTunes revolution. That was a consumer-driven shift that forever altered the way music was packaged and sold.

In a similar manner, online search is transforming conventional selling models. While Google is innovating at warp speed, the sales process of many businesses remains stuck in the 1990s, relying on outdated and ineffective strategies.

Just think about how buyer behavior has changed in recent times. When you decide to buy a car, do you rush straight to the car dealer? Of course not! You’ll spend hours online, researching various car makes and models.

Google-MozillaYahoo will supplant Google’s search engine on Firefox’s Web browser in the U.S., signalling Yahoo’s resolve to regain some of the ground that it has lost in the most lucrative part of the Internet’s ad market.

The five-year alliance announced Wednesday will end a decade-old partnership in the U.S. between Google Inc. and the Mozilla Foundation, which oversees the Firefox browser. The tensions between Google and Mozilla had been rising since Google’s introduction of the Chrome browser in 2008 began to undercut Firefox. Google’s current contract with Mozilla expires at the end of this month, opening an opportunity for Yahoo to pounce.

Even though Chrome is now more widely used, Firefox still has a loyal audience that makes more than 100 billion worldwide search requests annually.

googleslapWhatever you want to call it, Google rolled it out October 17th. Now if you follow the rules and your SEO company do the same, then you have nothing to worry about. Unfortunately the last three clients we have picked up all came with the same problems, penalties.

How did they get them? Simple, bad decisions, cheap solutions and promises about ranking high, short cuts and naivety. Sorry to say but they are still out there, I must get 10 emails a day and people still fall for it, that’s why I enclosed this pic, the wife’s crazy on minions, but it says it all, take the cheap route, cut corners with search engines and this is what happens.

That’s just the start, it can take months to clean the mess up, if at all,  especially if they have had software generated links to the site, blog comments made around the world, all the quick fix stuff sometimes people see results from, usually only for a short time, then the bomb drops.

Luckily if you get to the right company, they may be able to help. For interest all 3 companies have recovered, one is now back on Google’s page 1. The essence of this story is, there is no quick fix, it takes time, costs a decent amount of money to do it right, at least $1500 per month for a smallish company and that amount will grow going forward, it’s not a one-time fix forever.

We like to call it Online real estate, imaging your paying rent or a lease for your office space, you don’t pay, you lose it, same with online, your website and brand is your online real estate, you need to keep it updated and looking nice and as you grow into other areas, you may need new content for them, like a sales rep to spread the word about you, no different online, it’s ongoing and expanding and it takes time & dollars to reach the pinnacle, the day you stop investing in your company or website the only way is down.

A tough pill to swallow for some, but that’s the reality and the net is not going away anytime yet.

Need help or advice? Call us today, we would be happy to try and help.

The world of search engine optimization is like a large and fairly confusing maze. And while every business can benefit from improving their ranking on search engines like Google and Bing, as soon as you start looking for help, you begin to get email after email and call after call from SEO providers promising you the top position on the results pages. The problem is, how do you tell which SEO firm is the best one for you, and how do you begin to even decide which one is right?

Check the SEO on their own website:
When you search for their company name, are they at least the first result that comes up? Are there other pages that come up with them when you look for their name? Do they have strong meta information that helps to sell themselves and their services, just because they don’t carry any real authority with the engines it still shows as their snippet. Do they rank locally? Ideally you’re in talks with a local agency, but if they can’t show up for their business name or for their location, how could they possibly help you and your business?

What is their cost:
If they’re offering discount packages for their “services” then they are likely not the company that will work in your best interest. A true SEO company will be doing an in-depth investigation before they offer you a quote, every company has different markets, competition, and goals. Imagine a house painter quoting you a price without ever looking at your home – you can bet they’ll either do a shoddy job, won’t finish, or suddenly have all sorts of hidden fees.

What kind of relationship do they have with their clients:
Your goal is to build a relationship with a company that is going to be in constant contact with you for the entire scope of the project. They should be calling/emailing trying to understand your niche market, your online targets, and developing your conversion points on your website. Make sure they will report to you what they’re doing and the results, and in such a way that you can understand. You’re trusting your reputation with another company, make sure they have your best interest in mind, not just their bottom line.
