Whilst the internet offers us unprecedented access to information and resources I am getting more cynical and less trusting the older I get. I’m amazed how many company’s don’t do any due diligence before giving up hard earned cash nowadays before employing their new SEO Agency/Company.
We have all received those emails offering SEO services guaranteeing top results from supposedly professional agencies that only have a Gmail address, I ask……
Would you give up $20k, $30k or $100k to a smart talking salesperson at your door? Not likely, BUT many companies are happy to give that up to a company working from a PO Box, What’s the difference?
As a business owner, your investment in digital marketing is more than just the money you pay to an agency. You are putting your trust in these people to deliver a professional service to the best of their ability. The future of your business will be reliant on what your agency can do for you. The least you can expect is that they are a real business staffed by real people who have the capabilities to carry out the work they have been engaged to do.
In one of the city’s were Fresh has an office, 3 companies in the top 10 search on Google come up, obviously they have a little knowledge, but here’s the kicker, One works from a PO Box but has over 30 staff according to the bio, the other two are now on there 4th name in 5 years having gone out of business or the new Goto is rebranding, having left people with no results and no money. These are an example of fraudulent deceit at a new level although one I have long suspected as being well practiced.
This is not the first time we have come across such scam set ups. My advice to any business owner is to be careful before handing your business to just any web agencies. The vast majority, even those without a physical address are professional but sadly not what we see is not always what reality shows us to be.
Here are a few tips to help. most will have a very professional website describing their full range of digital marketing and web services. In fact the copy usually is very well written. BUT check the physical address to make sure its not an Safeway’s or PO Box, you can do this in Google Maps, Check their Linkedin profiles and those of the directors & staff, see if you get any red flags. Make sure that photos of the team members are not stock photos being used or pics from other websites. Brand logos on the website with no links, another red flag, these are just a few.
The long list of bad experiences business owners have had with less than reputable web development agencies keeps growing and the above is an excellent example of why business owners need to carry out their own due diligence before engaging agencies to take on their web development, SEO or digital marketing.
